A RARE CASE OF A SINGLE-ORIGIN ORANGE BOURBON FROM EL SALVADOR.
The Alfaro family has been growing coffee on their 30-acre farm for four generations. With this experience, they have a clear understanding that their exotic Orange Bourbon variety reveals its best qualities through natural processing methods—especially in their anaerobic interpretations. The family also values the fact that such methods conserve clean water, which is beneficial for the environment.
Having a single-origin coffee from El Salvador is already a rarity. But having one from such an exotic variety as Orange Bourbon is truly exceptional! Along with Typica, Bourbon is one of the two original Arabica cultivars. It was imported from Yemen to Bourbon Island (now called Réunion, east of Madagascar), from where it spread to Latin American countries. Its unique trait is the genetic mutations that result in different cherry colors. While most coffee cherries ripen to red, this Bourbon variety turns orange—and it’s primarily grown in El Salvador.
The Alfaro family takes pride in cultivating this legendary variety, and we are proud to offer such a distinctive product. The natural anaerobic process brings out the finest qualities of this remarkable coffee. Handpicked cherries were carefully sorted and fermented in sealed tanks with airlock valves, preventing oxygen exposure. After fermentation, the cherries were dried to stop the process and preserve the sugars within the beans. This method highlighted incredible sweetness without masking the bright, sparkling acidity. The coffee is intense and juicy, with a defined flavor profile of orange and raspberry, rounded off by juicy white peach. This coffee is not only rare and special—it’s also delicious, leaving a lingering fruity aftertaste.
