OUR FAVORITE PINK BOURBON
José Arcadio is another rising star in the constellation of coffee luminaries. Along with a new region for us—the town of Urrao—this coffee amazes with its uniqueness. The farmer focuses almost exclusively on cultivating exotic and rare varieties such as Chiroso, Pink Bourbon, and others. This lot is composed entirely of the remarkable Pink Bourbon variety.
Bourbon is one of the two ancestral Arabica cultivars, alongside Typica. Originating in Ethiopia and brought to Yemen around the 15th century, its seeds eventually reached Bourbon Island—now called Réunion, near Madagascar. From there, they spread to Latin America in the 1800s. The variety is known for several genetic mutations, some of which even affect the color of the ripe cherries. In this lot, the cherries ripened to a delicate pink hue! However, scientists have shown that Pink Bourbon is not a mutation of Bourbon at all, but rather a descendant of Ethiopian landraces. What sets it apart are its exceptional flavor attributes: an extraordinarily high cup quality and a juicy, vibrant profile that clearly suggest close kinship with the prized Geisha variety.
We know little about the farmer, yet his coffee speaks volumes. The natural process accentuates all the strongest features of Pink Bourbon grown on the cool slopes of Antioquia. This processing method adds intense sweetness and amplifies the tropical notes. A complex bouquet of berries in the aroma unfolds into juicy citrus and exotic fruits.
